You know who's rating your posts (or need to lurk more) and know their preferences and agendas. So ratings are useful.
Sure, but I was disputing Riva's suggestion that they could be casually used to establish what the majority thinks or wants (which is stacking assumption atop assumption imo). Whether he's correct or not wasn't really the point, so much as that his "method" is just conjecture.
