Okay, here's the deal: I have the desire to create a definitive Top Ten list for the 'Codex. So, pick the top ten cRPGs you think are the best of all time, post in this thread or PM me, and I will compile and tally the data and post the results on Friday the 14th. PC games only, specify individual games rather than series, and dungeon crawls, even if set in the modern day (Jagged Alliance, Silent Storm) count.

Let the contest begin!

Right now I'm considering the following titles... in no particular order:

Fallout
Fallout 2
Planescape: Torment
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Betrayal at Krondor
Arcanum
Bloodlines
the Sith Lords
Morrowind

Of course, thats just a quick, off the cusp of my brain list. I'll try to come up with something more concrete later this week.

...and if anyone wants to call into question the RPGness of any of my selections, go ahead. I'm happy to defend.

Planescape: Torment and Fallout have to be on the list.

I'm putting my "list of ten" into just two games so can each gain +5 towards being on the list. :P

I think those are the only games that everyone here agrees on. Maybe like 1% doesnt.

Alright, here is my take.
In kind-of-an-order:

Wizardry 8
Ultima IV
Ultima V
Ultima VII
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Fallout 1
Wizardry 7
Morrowind
Vampire : Bloodlines

You'll notice that there are no "official" Black Isle or Bioware items in my list. The truth is, I never got even close to finishing BG 1 or 2, lack of time and all that, and Icewind Dale, which I did finish, was very enjoyable but didn't make the cut.
I would love to have demonstrated my RPer pedigree by listing Planescape:Torment, but alas, I didn't own it till recently and haven't found the time.
I never played Arcanum to enough depth to make a decision on that either.
NWN is nowhere near my top 10; mainly due to the OC being rather bad, but the two expansions were very enjoyable, so those would definitely push it into my top 20. (BTW, anyone bought the premium-modules-on-a-cd that came out just recently?)

Daggerfall? Fuck I hated the combat in that game :P
(It has a lot of other stuff going for it though)

Hell, if it was "top 15" then I could have amazed you with my bad taste by shoving on Wizards and Warriors, Nox, and Black Crypt as well. :D

Jagged Alliance 2

Maybe I'll do the other four later. STAY TUNED.

Fallout 2
Arcanum
Vampire
Buck Rogers; matrix cubed
Gothic 2
Bg 2
Ultima 7; serpent isle
kotor 2 (hope they'll finish that 'original ending' mod soon though)

Fallout 2

Ultima Underworld II

Gothic II
ToEE

There are a lot of games like Betrayal at Krondor, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master et c that could easily have made the list - but I'm not sure they're all that good, rather than me remeber them fondly.

There is no 10th item on my list, because I've liked no other PC RPGs. I'm not even sure if D2 & Fate count, but you did say dungeon crawlers were OK. If we could have added console games, I would have added Crystalis and/or Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

I protest! This toplist is made only to strengthen codex hivemind and the results are already predictable.
The list will have only crpgs from late 90's. Fallout will beat Wasteland, Eye of the Beholder and Pool of Radiance hands down. And noone will vote Brotherhood of Steel or BG:Dark Alliance.

PS. Deus Ex isn't a computer roleplaying game. It's one of the best games and JC Denton owns all and is GOD. You can't change that or roleplay anything else.
PSS. btw Arcanum is teh bestest rpg.
