i'm quite surprised to see so much people mentioning Arcanum. I thought the game was mediocre. Very unbalanced and the dungeons had a very empty feel.
Obviously, you thought wrong. The game shines in the role-playing department.

1. Fallout2
2. Fallout
3. Vampire: Bloodlines
4. Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
5. Deus Ex

Planescape: Torment should definetly be on that list, but I have never played it (gotten into it actually), so I cannot give any valuable opinion about it and decide which place should it take. BaldursGate and other BW crap (never actually finished any BW game becaus got frustrated even though I tried very hardly). Teudogar and The Alliance with Rome seemed a bit too weak to get in fight between denominated grands, but otherwise it was sure game to mention.

I don't know... BG 1 and 2 bored the heck out of me and I tried to like them. I still have BG somewhere but why waste your time with it when you have Daggerfall?

Pitchforks and torches! Pitchfork and torches!

Edit: I guess Divine Divinity would 11 or such for me. It's great, but would be so much better if they cut out maybe, 50 % of the combat.

i bought the game shortly after the game was released, and even though it was VGA the graphics were nice. But with todays bigger monitors it certainly looks crap. But the game had a very distinctive graphic style (lots of orange and green) to make it very atmospheric.

PS. Deus Ex isn't a computer roleplaying game. It's one of the best games and JC Denton owns all and is GOD. You can't change that or roleplay anything else.
There's a few other games that I really, really, really like, but I wouldn't go ahead and call them RPGs so quickly (Deus Ex, Escape Velocity: Nova, Anachronox)
Jagged Alliance 2 (though not an rpg...not that this seems to have stopped anyone else)

Going by the initial post I thought it obvious that Jed was going for a slightly more inclusive definition, rather than sticking with some more exclusive one that will have everyone wailing and gnashing about what an RPG is (as per usual!! )

However, if he decides his list does not include the likes of System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, then that leaves room on my list for games that everyone loves to hate, specifically Wizards and Warriors and Nox (well, ok, a few people here actually like that last one).

You have been warned!
