This is where I need the input of someone more familiar with Vogel's games. Are Exile, Avernum, and Avernum: Escape from the Pit all close enough to be considered the same game?

Party size limitation and some differences in mechanics are a huge step down from the original in my opinion. The story is basically the same but I think of them as separate as the original is still my favorite. Others may disagree. If combining them gets more people to try the original (higher on the list of THE BEST) then go ahead and count them the same.

At the very least I would separate Avernum: Escape from the Pit from the first two. It plays very differently, the entire character progression mechanics have been reworked, the engine is the modern one from Avadon, which means that the main thing that the games have in common is the story. I put Avernum in the list of my Hidden Gems, but I would never do the same for Avernum: Escape from the Pit.

The story, the setting, the quests, the dungeons, the characters, the enemies, the loot, and the general gameplay are all nearly identical from game to game. Combat and anything combat-adjacent were completely overhauled in each iteration.
