Its not about DP or the Ukraine thread, its about some dysfunctional Vatnik who decided to hack the account of DP and then delete his and other users comments but literally hundreds of posts were deleted. This caused instability on the thread and then the Codex moderators had to spend hours restoring the posts

So there are several considerations that include

• this is about the principle of Codex not allowing hacks even if you dont post on the Ukraine thread. Any forum that encourages debate will quickly collapse if hacking of accounts is tolerated
• if the moderators had said " well its just one thread, who cares. Deal with it " then tomorrow its another thread and maybe its a topic you spend time on or its your account
• but the point of 2FA means you are protected if anyone hacks your password because the next time they try to use your logon it will be from a different device and they will be prompted for the 2FA code which is only available from your cell phone where you setup the original 2FA connection
• this entire security change is because of hackers who cant simply respect the principle of debate and someone having a different opinion to then. They the ones you should be annoyed with

Its takes 10 minutes to setup 2FA and the benefit means the chance of anyone hacking your account is vastly reduced

You have two choices: you can set it to use an app like Authy

Authy is almost as fishy as google, always requires an account (for the cloud backups) and collects a ton of telemetry for nefarious purposes. All Android folks seem to recommend Aegis, it supports the exporting of code vaults which can then be stored in other devices.
