In another Galactic Civilizations 2 journal entry, Stardock's Brad Wardell is looking for input on the inclusion of Mega Events. These would be crazy, unbalancing, optional, random events that would slam your well laid-out game against the wall. Like:

Allied War. Three of the 9 players who are already friendly decide to ally together and declare war on everyone else.

Plague. A space plague that will gradually wipe everyone out unless a particular research item is found.

Culture Shock. A particular alien civilization gets their influence boosted by 10X and players have to decide how to combat it.

Ultimate Doom. A particular civilization is getting their abilities increased by 1% each week (turn). Eventually they'd be gods. What is to be done?

A horde of space pirates begin wiping out the defenses of each race.

As long as they're optional, I can't imagine that any GalCiv2 player wouldn't want a taste of that. Players that are already bored of the game, and there's quite a few at this point, would be eager to re-install. I just hope they add a "Naked Chicken Apocalypse" option for the truly hardcore.
Spotted @ Galciv Official Page

Random events really appeal to me.

Even if they can fuck things up for you, prevailing (or even protracting your demise) when the shit hits the fan can give a bit of a rush.

"And then this fucking apocalypse of Naked Chickens spread across the map and it was all I could do not to have my worlds buried under a surfeit of fried chicken as we fought them off with KFC-certified laser-cookers". Awesome.

@ Greatatlantic: nice discussion there. Wardell was surprisingly frank about things that could have been better.

Shouldn't an apocalypse of chickens just gradually lower population, since the people are dying from obesity?
