Well, the very purpose of a manual is providing information on how to play the game. As nice as the extra fluffy bits are, and no matter how well it may written, if I'm playing the game and require a specific bit of info because something has stumped me, then it fails at its primary task because I have to flip through the whole fucking thing to find what I'm looking for.

Don't make excuses for sloppy functionality. Something can have reams of beautifully written content, and that's great, but it's soured if it's a painful process just to access it. (see Planescape: Torment)
