would cerrtainly be in line with what I expect the Danish results to be. However, if the poll were done in say Italy, Greece or Spain, I'm not that sure. I don't mind anything Italian, Spanish or Greek, but the thing is that I believe that most (note I'd said most!) people from south Europe will be offended by sexual scenes and themes rather than violence as the north Europeans do.

This is so not true. There is a reason a female porno actress went into Italian politics you know. Uh, I mean a reason apart from their politics being fucked up. Hm, fucked up... porno actress.

Obviously parents see the risks of sex (ie emotional problems, pregnancy, turning lezzie/homo etc) to their young'uns as greater than the risk that they'll suddenly turn into psychopaths. That's why it's a higher concern. Doesn't mean they think "VIOLENCE GOOD, SEX BAD"... it helps if you try to understand things in context.

QFT. I'm 25 and I'm feeling really, really old these days. Walking through malls and the like, preteens dress and act incredibly sexual. I don't remember my generation being like that, I blame the media.

We have some of the highest AIDs rates in the world here and they've been busting teens having sex and whatnot in the malls a lot lately. I heard a case of someone finding out their 13 year old daughter was HIV positive, she'd had over 20 partners. 20. How do you tell your 13 year old she probably won't see 20 years of age? Dear God, nightmarish.

IMHO odds are higher teenagers are going to experiment with sex than shoot each other. After all, violence and killing is always portrayed as hurting another human being, something even a child can understand as negative, sex is portrayed as positive, cool, fun, what everyone is doing etc etc.

Personally I plan to get my kids hooked on CRPGs, MMOs and computer games. They'll be so socially inept they won't interact with other human beings except via forums. ;)

I agree. The last interesting or challenging sex game I played was "sentimental shooting." Sex just isn't as fun in game terms as violence. For one thing, most fun games require both hands. This makes most sex scenes non-interactive or a click-through affair, making them a recipe for boredom.

Since when were those two mutually exclusive in Japanese games?

They aren't, but like jRPGs the primary exporter of that **** is japan, so that is what everyone calls them.

America's STD infection rates according to the CDC.

That's not quite the problem. The problem is that the consequences are not often depicted for random, senseless sex in video games. It's easier to see how murder and mayhem can damage lives than STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

P.S. The highest risk of HIV infection involves anal sex, with an infected top into an infected bottom. Just thought you should know.

Gays gave us the new black death. Now I simply can't stick my cock into anything as I once wanted. Now I gotta wear cellophane wrap when I go a banging.

Oh for crying out loud, americans, always have to try be better.

STD != HIV.

HIV stats :

WorldStatsRegionGraph07.gif

800px-People_living_with_HIV_AIDS_world_map.PNG

http://www.avert.org/worlstatinfo.htm

America :

It is estimated that 1.3 million people are living with HIV in North America and 760,000 in Western and Central Europe.

Africa :

An estimated 1.7 million adults and children became infected with HIV during 2007. This brought the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the region to 22.5 million by the end of the year.

More new cases of infection last year than the sum total of American cases. If I remember correctly it is like 1 in 5 adults in South Africa, with your average school leaver having a 50% chance to become HIV positive, statistically.

It is difficult to overstate the suffering that HIV has caused in South Africa. With statistics showing that almost one in five adults are infected,

Yep, I was right, 1 in 5.

P.S. The highest risk of HIV infection involves anal sex, with an infected top into an infected bottom. Just thought you should know.

Well done champ. You're an idiot, just thought you should know.

Actually AIDS poses the greatest threat to blacks, gays, and Mexicans because that's how Reagan instructed his biological weapons labs to design it.

You seem really defensive (and competitive) about STD statistics for some reason, and I know HIV isn't the only STD out there. I was simply providing some statistics from my country - I'm not trying to outdo anybody - and making a reference to the opinion that HIV was/is the gay plague.

If you want a great discussion as to why sex is seen as much worse than stealing or violence, read Bertrand Russell's "Why I am not a Christian."

Great read - he's got Xians dead on especially puritanical american ones.

Minor fix. I have that book, and I assume you're referring to the article, "Our Sexual Ethics" (please tell me if I'm off the mark). While he certainly makes some interesting claims, I believe he's a lot more astute about the consequences of such an outlook rather than the motives driving it, and that quite a few of his conclusions don't follow well. Worth reading to think about, at least.

Edit: If you are referring to the Christianity and Sex section, it's certainly damning, but not much of a discussion on exactly why sex is worse than other "evils."
