What about Exile/Avernum 2? You are missing the middle part of the trilogy, Fluent.

Although the visuals are simplistic they manage to convey what the author wished to present. I was a bit irritated by the fact the characters are not animated, but thanks to that they storm through locations and I don't have to observe hours of walking from point A to B. The atmosphere is skillfully created with minimal means - mostly it relies on good writing.

Vogel's games in a nutshell.

Jeff Vogel himself considers Ressurection to be a better game, more finished and with lots of additional content.

Of course he does. After all the effort of remaking it why wouldn't he say that?

I just heard 3 is the one everyone raves about being the best in the series. Should I give the 2nd game a look instead?

Depends. It's more railroaded, story-heavy and has sectoid civilization. :M

I definitely like Exile 3 more than Avernum 3. E3 has a bunch of weird magic spells, like you can learn a spell that creates infinitely-spawning fire forever and basically renders an area impossible to enter... and also, more practically, there's AoE and multi-target stuff that was removed for the remake because it didn't fit the engine.

If you can't get E3 running though, A3 is pretty good still.

Ok, so this night I finished my playthrough of Nethergate: Ressurection (the Roman campaign).

I actually got a sub-optimal ending (there are at least two) so I decided to replay the last few sections and set things right for the Roman Empire. When I finally looked at the clock it was 3 in the morning. Thanks for the sleepless night, Mr. Vogel!

Anyway, it was a very nice game, although at the end of those 50 hours I felt a bit of Vogel-fatigue. So I rushed to the final location, omitting several quests and dungeons (Aerie, Reptrakos). An interesting experience, great exploration and decent combat (although not very tactical, with the exception of several difficult battles against numerous foes), but few options for actual role-playing, not enough C&C and frankly, quite a simplistic storyline. Loosing every McGuffin each time I managed to get one quickly became old. I almost felt relief when my enemy gathered all the important artifacts and I had to rush into the final battle.

BTW, I am curious about the ending.

Is it possible to stop Sylak from casting a curse on the Roman Empire? In both endings I was able to reach he managed to do just that.

In one I forgot to destroy the cristal wands that were a gift to the Breton tribesmen, but stole the Eye of Cathdoc from the pedestal, thus damaging the ritual. As a result not only RE was cursed, but also, after the faery folk left through the gate, Bretons used the wands to force out Romans out of Britain and then out of Gaul. Tempted by such proof of Roman weakness, other provinces rebelled and for the rest of their lives my PCs were crushing such rebellions.

Then I returned to the previous save. Destroyed the cristal wands, soldiered through this terrible Hedge Maze again, fought the final battle for the second time and stole the Eye of Cathdoc again (stealing other artifacts did not work for me, my guys just got hit by lightnings). The faeries managed to leave through the gate and Sylak casted his curse, but Rome did not loose Britain and Gaul. But due to the curse it could never again conquer new territories (which we know is not true, because historically, soon the Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia and Mesopotamia).

I read in the walkthrough it is possible to defeat Sylak. Maybe then the RE is not cursed. I actually destroyed all his host and managed to surround him with my Legionaries. But he had a ton of hps and even powerful attacks, taking 100 hps and more, seemed to barery scratch him. And then, when I was beating him up, my Druid managed to get his hands on the Eye, so the ending played out before I managed to check if he was actually a mortal. And I cannot find the will to play through the final combat for the third time in a row... :negative:

Maybe I will however. I am too curious...

All in all, it sure was fun, but I think I'll play some other games before coming back to Vogel's creations. From what I experienced I find they should be consumed in reasonable chunks...
