There are two similar Russian websites, TJournal and DTF, run by the same company. The former is dedicated to politics and was banned by the government. The latter is dedicated to games. There was recently an informal poll about favourite nostalgic games on TJournal. I was taken aback by the fact that essentially random people had a very solid taste in games, outside a few brainfarts. It's no Codex, but it's not embarrassing at all. Here are the top voted answers, which include stuff like Warlords 2, Caesar 3, Jagged Alliance 2, Ultima Online, Deus Ex, Arcanum, and so on.

Worms
Starcraft
Age of Empires
Quake
Neighbours from Hell (?)
HoMM3
Sims
Diablo
Stronghold
Caesar 3

GTA 1
Carmageddon
Earth Worm Jim
Counterstrike
Unreal Tournament
Commandos
C&C
Dune 2
Fallout 1

Settlers
Alien Shooter
X-Com
Jagged Alliance 2

Z
Allods
Lords of the Realm
Ultima Online
Civilization 1
Syndicate
Warlords 2

Nox
Deus Ex
Arcanum
Dark Colony
Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth

Meanwhile, the people at the gaming website often keep listing primitive JRPGs, action games, graphics whore games, mainstream RPGs like Mass Effect, etc. The age group shouldn't be too radically different.

This begs the question - do average avid gamers actually have worse tastes in games than non-gamers? They are probably much more influenced by things like gaming conventions, which are typically very graphics- and AAA-focused. They are also more influenced by bribed gaming journos. Besides, many non-gamers probably did play games, but were fed up by how bad they were turning. Meanwhile, many gamers have a high tolerance for bad or primitive games. Avid gamers also seem to like gook scum porn etchings more, often leading to an interest in console games. It probably depends on the country a fair deal.
There's some truly dire shit on that list suggesting either a small sample size or the implication that the post soviet gaming scene was so barren they had to play crap like Alien Shooter and Dark Colony.
Your post reads like someone who feels superior for not liking modern music despite never diverging from "Top 10 Classic X" lists.

Why should we gamers care about non-gamer opinion's taste?

Sure, they might display to have better "selection". Note that, not taste. They are not gamers so why would they have taste in game?
