    Civilization 4

You can set custom res in the ini file. The UI does not scale though so if you go too high the text is too small.

Why did Real Time Strategy genre die out?

There was a moment there, I forget when exactly but it was shortly before RTS dropped off sharply, probably early-mid 2000s. All the gaming press and commentators were bleating loudly about base building in RTS was boring tedious and outdated, because you had to rebuild the base on every level...

Why did Real Time Strategy genre die out?

I think so, foot buttons would be great for moving the camera around, instead of having to mash the F keys or whatever. Not that I play at that level but the pros could make good use of it, they are constantly moving the camera around to different saved locations.

    Total War: Star Wars?

It's interesting that a lot of older franchises were successful as much as a result of a superior engine as the game itself. Crytek, id software, epic, etc., probably Total War too with the ability to show lots of units at one time being a feature. Engines don't get talked about as much these...

All those super high res assets but you can't see any details because of all the noise What if Half Life 2 was made today?

    Screenshot thread

Why are modern games so foggy. The noise floor is so high it's like there is a mist everywhere. Every modern game makes me want to activate the windscreen wipers. It's so strange that just as technology (HDR, 10 bit colour) starts to get adopted that enables higher contrast and lower noise...

Why did Real Time Strategy genre die out?

I think SC2 was only successful because of the pre-existing Korean led competitive scene. There were podcasts, streamers, pro players, casters etc., a whole ecosystem just waiting for this game to drop into it. Add to that the terminally loyal Blizzard fandom and this game got a massive amount...

Possible Valve's next game: Deadlock (rumors gaining traction)

Why would they make a third person shooter? Are they going to release it on consoles or something?

Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shut down by Microsoft

There was no "before it was on steam". It was on steam from release. Maybe not required though Store Release Date 28 October 2008 (16 years ago) Steam Release Date 28 October 2008 – 17:00:00 UTC (16 years ago) Original Release Date 28 October 2008 – 07:00:00 UTC (16 years ago) (1225177200)

Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shut down by Microsoft

It's the same gamebryo frankenstein thay've been updating since Morrowind, not a new engine from scratch. Much bigger budget but much bigger sales too. Should have been profitable unless they were really inefficient. Not sure what success looks like if you get half of Fallout 4's lifetime sales...

Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shut down by Microsoft

Fallout 3 required steam when it was released. The non-GOTY edition has about 20k reviews, probably a reasonable indication of first-year sales. Starfield has about 150k reviews. Seems strange that the former would be considered a success and the latter a failure. They must have wasted massive...

Why did I click on this? It's one of the worst written articles I've ever seen. It's full of fake quotes where it seems the author is larping in his head

Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks shut down by Microsoft

Microsoft's strategy over the last few years makes no sense to me. They seem to be following the loss leader strategy with the cheap service, with the hopes that one day it will be profitable when they fill it full of ads and jack up the price. Like twitter, netflix or spotify, but those...
