Irrational has released patch v1.3 for their original superhero title, Freedom Force.

Irrational Games is pleased to announce the release of the Freedom Force version 1.3 Patch! You can download the patch from us.

Freedom Force version 1.3 fixes a problem where the game would not run successfully under Windows XP Service Pack 2.

They self-funded and developed the patch on their own without the help or approval of the bean counters at Electronic Arts, who thought it would be a better idea not to release a patch so people would be more likely to buy a sequel or expansion pack.

That's a pretty damn decent thing to do. Kudos to them.

That'd be the sequel or expansion pack that Electronic Arts isn't publishing? And wouldn't poor support for the first game just scare off repeat business?

IrrationalKen explained on the FreedomFans forum that EA didn't want to fund a patch because they wanted more people to buy the planned expansion pack at the time and that would fix whatever issues the original game had. If it sounds stupid, that's because it is.

EA did the exact same thing with Sims and C&C Generals. One of the expansion packs for the Sims was completely broken, and the only way to fix it was to get the expansion they released later. C&C Generals was completely imbalanced (Chinese Overlord Tanks destroyed everything) with disfunctional multiplayer before the release of the expansion. It's still bad, because of the newly implemented American superweapon, but it's not as bad.
