GameSpy has posted a 5-page long interview with Dave Arneson, the co-creator of DnD. If you recall, Dave had already put his stamp of approval on Bioware, and apparently he still feels that way.

What about strategy and role-playing games?
Yeah, that's what they're called. And with those the role is spelled r-o-l-l and not r-o-l-e. So I teach my kids how to put the "role" back in role-playing.
OMG! The old bastard stole our line!

Are there any particular role-playing games or systems that are out today that you really like?
I tried out EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot. I liked Dark Age of Camelot better than EverQuest, but they were both okay. You can form a party like you do in a D&D game, but your party can only "kind of" cooperate with each other. It's just not the same thing as actually being together in a group and doing it. Something gets lost in the translation. I started the Neverwinter Nights series and am looking forward to getting the new one. That's pretty much the only one I've found that really has any role-playing elements in it.
Well, comparing to MMORPGs, NWN is loaded with role-playing goodness.
