I've received these NWN2 Beta impressions from an anonymous source brave enough to disregard the NDA agreement:

The addition of the tiefling and aasimar races was a nice touch, though without multiple playthroughs I can’t tell how it affects balance.

I maxed out the graphics textures at first which resulted in a good looking game but very low framerate, fraps had it at 20 fps. Reducing the resolution and textures had little effect. This appears to be a constant and a lot of people have posted on the beta boards about it. There is also no way to set AA in game, this may be just the beta. I forced it on the graphics card controls which improved the look considerably.

Within the first 10 minutes play of the game I had encountered two of my all time favourite people, Charles Xavier from X-men and Elvis. I wish I was kidding, they have a gruff southerner with the massive pork chop sideburns and bald guy with the voice from the old X-men cartoons. This may be a nod to the Patrick Stewart jokes that haunted Oblivion.

The interface feels more like an update of Baldurs Gate than NWN. The radial is completely gone. Multiple character control is handled pretty much identically to the way the IE games handled it. To me it’s a major improvement, I do prefer single characters but if you are going to have a party, in a RT with pause game, this is the way to handle it. I have to say without a great deal of playing it feels much more like a spiritual successor to the IE games, than a sequel to NWN.

Well I've given it a bit more game time, played through the first part of the OC that I had access too, basically the tutorial, and some multiplayer.

-The dialogue, dialogue skills actually give options. Think KOTOR, only had access to the start and that was basically diplomacy- "gimme more stuff" but I did talk myself out of a fight with some lizardmen. Of course I had to got through a hell of a lot of figthing to get to where I could negotiate my way out of things. It was nice of the Lizardmen leader to let me go after I'd slaughtered so many of his buddies.

- Graphics, definite improvement but there are some issues - see below

- Influence - Decisions that match a companions alignment , I saw the influence gains but not the results.
<br>
- Storyline - From what little i've seen we still have the potential for massive cliches. We have a main character whose past is shrouded in mystery, raised by a foster father not knowing where he has come from. Still though there is the evidence of some potential subtleties, a cold and distant father, the arrogant mage master hiding his war history. I could be filling in the blanks and being overly optimistic, but I was left hopeful.

1. The tutorial integrates testing the various aspects of the UI well in the form of a town fair with various challenges. As far as tutorials go its fairly painless and relatively short. There are some nice touches, for example in the battle part you meet three brothers who are your typical town bullies. Later when the town is attacked you find one of them injured and have the options [dialogue] of healing, or slitting his throat.

2. Nope, you have to fight at some stage. You're going through a dungeon hack of lizard men, when you reach the end room their Leader is performing some ritual. When you enter dialogue you have the option of using diplomacy to compare the plight of your village, which has just been attacked, with their battle with other beasts. I found this amusing considering I'd just slaughtered the majority of his people on the way to that room. Using diplomacy he agrees not to attack if you help him agains his foes in future. Before this , the attack on the town , sees a small horde of people attack with no option of dialogue. So no matter which way you cut it you're going to be seeing a lot of combat in this game.

3. I haven't seen the depth of how Influence works. From what I played, you make a choice and based on the apparent alignment of that choice you gain influence. I didn't have enough of the game to play to see how that could play out. I think the influence moments are arbitrary since when I chose not to kill the bully, instead healing him, I gained no influence with my lawful good party members.

4. You get two party members at the start who are basic cookie cutter characters. A female mage and a male warrior. Nothing noteworthy or interesting about them at all. Well apart from the fact the female mage gets deep fried when the town is attacked.
<br>
The one saving grace is you don't leave the town with either, when you head to neverwinter you walk alone. There are some relatively interesting characters though, the father and the town mage, so theres a lot of potential there for a good story.

The story will be "epic", but I feel like they will sneak some subtlety in there, i'm optimistic it will have more depth that NWN 1, though it would be hard for it to have less. My guess at the story so far, the main character appeared mysteriously during a battle involving demons that hit the town years before. You're foster father raised you and will aviod talking about your mother. He finds a silver shard which he hides in a cave and asks you to retrieve and bring to Neverwinter after the battle.

One of the loading screen information points describes a silver sword the githzerai/githyanki use that can sever the tie between an astral walker and his body killing him immediately, doesn't take a huge leap of logic to tell you what the silver shard is from. The first non tutorial mission is to find your foster fathers brother and get the other part of the shard, as this appears to be what the attackers were after. My guess is there is some planar war spilling over to neverwinter, the attacker that kills your mage npc appears to be a githzerai/githyanki.

I get a feeling there are 4 (it's teh magic number) shards that you must find, plus the one that's in your ass.

I pre-ordered a month or so back. And I must say I am glad I haven't followed the development much. I am looking forward to it being more than NWN and so far from most of what I have read it is.

So, you're not stuck with a sword up your ass?

That doesn't sound all that bad actually. Think I'll wait for some more complete reviews before buying though. I can keep myself bujsy with Gothic for now.

I think the fact that D&D has moved from t-shirts to rings as pre-order/special edition goodies says a lot about the state of the industry. Not only does it display a clear lack of understanding of the target audience, Atari has dashed my hopes of having a wardrobe made up entirely of game related apparel. It'd be kind of like those kids you see wearing Jeans West RAMONES t-shirts, but less pathetic.

In the FIRST chapter, that is. The second chapter will involve finding the five Gith responsible for forging and using the blade. The third chapter will be concerned mainly with finding and killing Teh Four Demon Doods who aid the Shadow King (that's his name, innit?) in his insidious plans. The fourth chapter will be a rushed, confusing, buggy mess, with characters falling into lava, appearing five minutes later, illogical landscapes, and an utterly ridiculous final confrontation, where the Shadow King summons three flying mudcrabs to menace you.

Well, see, they would have explained that, but they had a really tight deadline.

I understand that all of us here are desperately trying to ward off the death of our hobby by encouraging *good* games, but why the cynicism? So the starting party comes with a "cookie-cutter" fighter and mage. That's one way to put it, i.e. in a highly negative light.

DnD uses a class-based system. Each 1st level mage looks an awful lot like another 1st level mage if you drill down to the basics. Same thing with fighters. As a DnD fan, I read that I start with those companions and I think "you start with two friends, one a man-at-arms, the other a novice mageling, both more enthusiastic than skilled, but ready to face whatever it is you must face at your side."

Most of the rest of these comments reflect the same bored, cynical worldview. Presented with a story, he finds nothing new. Presented with a UI design, it's the same-old, same-old. This sounds an awful lot like Comic Book Guy.

Reading between the lines here I see NWN2 incorporating some of the best of KOTOR2's story-telling and character system with the spirit of the IE games.

Hell, your milage may vary, but to my mind that is the *best* goddamn news on the RPG front I've heard in a loooooooooong time!

Love how you've gotten the guys world view from a game review. To me it sounds fairly balanced and relatively positive, just because someone doesn't read like a twink on amphetamines raving about every little detail doesn't make it negative.

Then why bother with a game at all, cut yourself some paper dollies and go imagine your way to a wonderful world of magic and adventure.

This does sound encouraging.

I wonder if the game is such that the KOTOR-style death system is somehow forgivable.

Actually, the person is a coward. if he was truly brave, he'd admit to who he was and face the sconsequences of his LYING. He is untrustworthy therefore he is scum.

As for the story, it still sounds silly.

And, NWN2 has NOTHING worthy in common with KOTOR1 or KOTOR2.

NWN series > KOTOR series


P.S. BG series is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!!!!!!

Then what would you propose? If they would make something weird, like Morte, everyone would scream that its too over the top or cloning PS:T or something similiar.

And by the way, this is only the tutorial. Would it be worth the time to create emotionally powerful and deep characters for, as mentioned, a really short time that will probably not have any affect on the later game?

But dont worry, some of the real companions were revealed and they seem special eneugh.

In the new rules clerics are no longer just your average healers. Heck, they are the most powerful class(see the numerous complains at the forums), armed both with ridiculous buffing and damage dealing spells.

And I assume that their healing powers will stand come in handy, such as poison, negative energy and disease cures and such. Also, they are quite focused on battling undead, so...

Clerics arenot the most pwoerful class neccessarily. That's a fallacy. I woudl put arcane spellcasters up there as well.

In NWN2, Obsidian has it that if your character(s) fall to 0hp, they remain so for the duration of the battle unless a raise dead/ressuretcion spell is cast on them. Otherwise, they remain unconcious until after the battle (not counting party wipes). It's a tad better than the KOTOR series but still REALLY lame for a D&D game.


As for weird characters, Obsidian did that already. They have a tin can as one of the joinables.



I don't think that's a tutorial perse, btw, but the actual games' prologue. If isn't my non apologizes

It sounds average. KOTOR2 in Fantasyland. If its not too bad I will buy it, but only because theres nothing else bothering about in a few months time.

Then again, Europa Universalis 3 might be out then...hmm. :lol:

Seriously, it doesn't sound horrible. It just sounds like the usual Fast Food RPG's that make up the entire board these days. Nothing different, maybe a few tweaks but thats it. I am actually looking forward more to Dragon Age at the moment, thats saying something....

Volourn, why must you continue to crap on about BG being dead? Its not my favourite RPG, but it will still be on peoples lips when Jade Empire will be a 'wtf game is that?'. Personally I prefer the travelling RPG's to the corridor runners of today, so the quicker they get back to a similar system, the better.

Edit: How are the classes looking? Any stupidly tough classes? Any big gimpings? What Feats have been nerfed? etc
